Smoker’s check-up
Lung cancer is one of the most common causes of cancer-related death worldwide.
A low-dose CT scan (LDCT) is primarily used in smokers for the early detection of lung cancer. Here are the main reasons why:
- Early Detection of Lung Cancer
Lung cancer often causes no symptoms for a long time and is therefore frequently discovered at an advanced stage.
LDCT can detect even small tumors when they are still easy to treat.
- Reduced Radiation Exposure
Compared to a standard CT scan, LDCT emits a significantly lower radiation dose, minimizing the risk associated with the examination.
- Recommended for High-Risk Groups
Screening is recommended, especially for heavy smokers (≥ 20 pack-years*) over the age of 50 (e.g., according to USPSTF guidelines or the NELSON study).
- Improved Survival Chances
Studies (e.g., NLST, NELSON) show that LDCT screening can reduce lung cancer mortality by 20 to 24%. LDCT is therefore an effective screening tool.
This examination is performed as a complement to a general medical check-up.
